At Prairie Park Nature Center, you can explore 100 acres of pure, unadulterated natural splendor. The property is comprised of a mix of wetlands, woodlands, and even prairie land. While meandering around the sprawling property, be on the lookout for a variety of wildlife, from beavers and deer to bobcats and myriad species of birds, like eagles, falcons, hawks, and owls.

Sticking with the nature theme, pop into KU Biodiversity Institute & Natural History Museum, which is dedicated to the study of plants, animals, fossils, and artifacts as a means to benefit the planet and its inhabitants. The museum is comprised of four floors that are chock full of exhibits featuring everything from insects to microbes to plants to fossils and beyond. The result of a collaboration between three local Rotary clubs, the Lawrence Rotary Arboretum consists of two different gardens. One features local pollinator plants, which, as the name suggests, are plants that attract other animals which are responsible for spreading pollen. The other provides habitat for butterflies. In addition to the two gardens, there’s also a stage where live band performances take place (check the calendar for a list of upcoming shows) and plenty of bike paths you’re welcome to pedal your way around.

If after that you’re a little natured out and want to spend some time focusing on your love of sports, The Booth Family Hall of Athletics is the place for you. This nearly 20,000-square-foot museum is dedicated to the legacy of sports at the University of Kansas. You’ll find memorabilia—such as jerseys, trophies, and photographs—from throughout the decades and, if you really want to get the full story, be sure to book a guided tour in advance.
